Looking after your team's wellbeing

We’ve all felt the ripple effect of Covid-19. The new realities of working from home, temporary unemployment, the lack of social interaction and exercise can have a negative impact on our mental, physical and financial health.

The key thing to remember is that you’re not alone – there is support available – either through Government assistance packages or large corporates like banks who are pausing mortgage repayments and Telcos offering free data. Many businesses are also offering free trials for meditation, gym or yoga workouts and even free cooking or dance classes to help keep people mentally and physically active.

To help you look after your ‘whole self’ during this time, we’ve put together some physical, mental and financial health tips which we hope you’ll find useful.

Tip #1: Physical health
  • Eat well - Maintaining a healthy diet is important. What we eat and drink impacts our immune system and affects our body’s ability to prevent and fight infections.   • Sleep well - If you’re not getting enough quality sleep, you may feel anxious and stressed. Start your healthy sleep habits by getting up and going to bed at similar times every day, make time to unwind in the evening and limit your media exposure, especially in the hour or so before you go to bed.   • Exercise - Staying physically active helps boost your mood and wellbeing. The World Health Organization recommends healthy adults exercise 30-minutes a day. Why not go for a walk with a family member or friend, register for an online yoga or stretch class or get some fresh air while tidying up the garden?

Tip #2: Mental health
  • Practice self-care - Even though you may be focused on working remotely, home schooling children or caring for others, it’s important you try and find time each day to do something you enjoy. This could include listening to music, meditating, reading or walking the dog with a friend. See our article for lots more ideas.
  • Stay connected - Being socially connected and sharing how you’re feeling is a big part of mental wellbeing. Organise a time to talk with a family member or friend via phone, chat, email, FaceTime or even schedule a group video conference like Zoom.  See our Technology article for other options.
  • Stay informed - Follow trusted sources to take reasonable precautions to maintain your health. A good source is the Australian Government’s Health Alert website.

Tip #3: Financial health
  • Review your budget and manage your debt - If you’ve been impacted financially, now’s the time to review your family budget and reduce spending and debt by reprioritising your needs vs wants. Other considerations to save money include refinancing your home loan, reviewing your car and home insurance policies and shopping around for the best deal for your phone, internet and streaming services.   • Get support - If you’re feeling financially overwhelmed, you may be able to take advantage of individual or business Government assistance packages. These include support for retireesearly access to your super, and the JobKeeper Payment, a temporary subsidy for businesses significantly affected by Covid-19.
