Choosing how your super is invested at all stages of your life is important. Whether you’ve just started working and building your super savings, right through to enjoying your retirement (and the years of building a retirement nest egg in between), making sure your super is invested in the right option at each stage can have a big impact on your retirement lifestyle. But where do you start and how do you know you’re making the right choice? It’s not as hard as you may think. Here’s a checklist to get you started.
Many super funds offer a range of investment options with different levels of investment risk, often referred to as growth or defensive focussed options.
Growth options invest more of your money in growth assets such as international and Australian shares whereas defensive options invest more in defensive assets such as fixed interest and cash. Most funds will provide you with information about what percentage of your money is invested in growth assets compared to defensive assets for each of their investment options.
Unless you make a choice upfront, a super fund will place you in a default investment option when you join, but that might not be the best option for you.
If you haven’t made a choice since joining EISS Super you’ll be invested in our Balanced (MySuper) option which aims to invest 75% of your money in growth assets and 25% in defensive assets.
You can see what option(s) the money in your EISS Super account is invested in by logging in to your online account and selecting 'My Investment' at the bottom of the 'Current Investments' section (check). You can switch investment options at any time, and at no cost.
The right investment choice can make a big difference to how much money you have in your super account when you reach retirement. So how do you make the right choice?
Work out your time to retirement
Generally, if you have more than 10 years to retirement, you’re probably better suited to an option that includes a higher level of investment in growth assets. This is because you have time to ride out short-term market falls and take advantage of long-term growth.
Know your attitude to risk
Your level of comfort with investment risk should also impact your investment choice. You need to invest in an option that lets you sleep at night.
Our Risk Attitude Quiz can help you identify your attitude to risk and will provide some information about the type of investment option that generally suits that attitude.
You can then look at how your super is currently invested to see if your current investment choice aligns with your risk attitude – who knows maybe it’s time for a change.
EISS Super has 5 investment options that you can choose to invest in. Each option has a different level of exposure to growth and defensive assets. The investment options have been designed to offer different potential rates of return, degrees of volatility and varying risk to suit your individual circumstances. The below table provides you with some further information about the recent performance of each of our investment options and their different allocations between growth and defensive assets.
