Home safety reminder: Our top five tips

Maintaining a secure and well-organised household can be demanding at the best of times, but when you add in a global pandemic and intermittent lockdowns, things can get even more challenging. Although there may be things we can’t control outside our homes, we do have the power to protect ourselves and our loved ones at home. To help, we’ve compiled a list of our top five tips to maintaining a safe environment for you and your family.

  1. Medicines and any hazardous chemicals or poisons need to be handled with care, so keep these items out of sight and reach (particularly from small children).
  2. Create an emergency plan so you and your family are never caught off guard. All family members need to be able to react fast and know the way to get out (in case of a fire) or what numbers to call (ambulance, police, fire) in case of an emergency.
  3. Regularly check your home alarm systems (for example smoke detectors and motion sensors) to ensure they’re working properly.
  4. Protect you and your family from any physical hazards within your home, for example, remove clutter from the main living areas and keep your floors dry to prevent serious falls or injuries. You can also put anti-slip pads under rugs or an anti-slip mat in the shower.
  5. Avoid home break-ins by always keeping your doors and windows locked. You can also consider installing motion detectors around the outside of your home and/or invest in a home alarm.
