Insurance may be an important part of your superannuation arrangements. You may already, through your membership in the Energy Industries Superannuation Scheme, have some insurance cover. However, this may not be sufficient for your needs. We have, therefore, arranged for extra cover to be made available through additional voluntary insurance.

The Voluntary Insurance Information Booklet explains the features of the extra cover and how you can apply for it.

The cover is provided through a contract with Tower Australia Limited (the Insurer) and is available at competitive rates. Cover is underwritten by the Insurer on an individual member basis. Cover does not commence until the Insurer notifies you that they have accepted your cover and any conditions they have put on that cover.

What types of cover are available?

There are three types of cover available:

  • Lump Sum Death Only Cover
  • Lump Sum Death and Total and Permanent Disablement Cover
  • Salary Continuance Insurance, available for either a 2 year period or until age 65, which provides income protection for temporary disablement.

In addition, Accident Cover is provided between the time we receive your application and the time that the cover is approved or rejected (see pages 10 and 15 for further information).

    Who can apply for cover?

Any member of the Energy Industries Accumulation, Electrical Contractors Division or Executive Schemes can apply for lump sum Death Only Cover (if less than age 71), lump sum Death and Total and Permanent Disablement Cover (if less than age 65) and Salary Continuance Insurance (if less than age 65 and gainfully employed).

How are premiums calculated and paid?

The premium depends on the amounts of cover you have, your age, sex, occupational classification and health status. Premiums are deducted from your member account each month. Premiums will be deducted from your compulsory employer contributions sub-account (ie Super Guarantee), unless that account does not have a sufficient balance. Premiums are payable for the whole month if you opt out on or after the 15th of any month. Rate increases for birthdays apply for the whole month if your birthday is before the 15th of the month.
